Portuguese NIF document checklist (2026)

Use this free checklist before you start a remote NIF application. Tick every item that applies to your case — incomplete files are the number-one cause of delay.

1. 01

   Valid passport (photo page)

   Colour scan of the full photo page. Machine-readable lines must be visible. Passport must not be expired on the submission date.

2. 02

   Proof of address outside Portugal

   Utility bill, bank statement, or official letter in your name, dated within the last 3 months. PO boxes are usually rejected.

3. 03

   Signed power of attorney (procuração)

   Authorises your fiscal representative to request the NIF. Sign exactly as your passport name (Latin script). Date it.

4. 04

   Birth certificate (minors only)

   Required when applying for someone under 18, together with both parents' signatures on the power of attorney (or sole-custody proof).

5. 05

   Name consistency check

   The name on the form, passport, proof of address, and power of attorney must match character-for-character.

6. 06

   Contact email and phone

   An address you check daily — providers may ask for a clearer scan or a corrected field before filing.
