NIF vs NISS vs NIPC in Portugal — What's the Difference? (2026)
Three Portuguese numbers, three institutions, three jobs. Mixing them up delays bank accounts, employment contracts, and company setup.

NIF is your tax ID (Autoridade Tributária). NISS is your social-security number (Segurança Social), needed to work or claim benefits. NIPC is the company tax ID — individuals never receive one. Almost everyone gets a NIF first; NISS comes when you start working or registering for social security; NIPC only exists for companies.
People relocating to Portugal often treat NIF, NISS, and NIPC as interchangeable "Portuguese ID numbers". They are not. Each is issued by a different institution, unlocks a different set of rights, and failing to know which one a bank or employer is asking for wastes days.
Side-by-side comparison
| Number | Full name | Issuer | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIF | Número de Identificação Fiscal | Autoridade Tributária (Finanças) | Every adult interacting with tax, banking, housing, or visas |
| NISS | Número de Identificação da Segurança Social | Segurança Social | Employees, freelancers, and anyone claiming social benefits |
| NIPC | Número de Identificação de Pessoa Coletiva | Autoridade Tributária | Companies and other legal entities only |
NIF — the tax number everyone needs first
The NIF is a nine-digit tax identification number. Banks, landlords, notaries, utility companies, and the AIMA visa process all ask for it. Non-residents can obtain it remotely with a fiscal representative. It does not by itself make you a tax resident.
NISS — social security, not tax
The NISS is issued by Segurança Social. You need it to sign an employment contract, register as self-employed (trabalhador independente), or access healthcare entitlements tied to contributions. Employers often apply for it on your behalf once you have a NIF and a work contract; freelancers register themselves on the Segurança Social portal.
- You generally cannot get a NISS without a NIF
- A NISS does not replace a NIF for banking or property
- Students and inactive residents may delay NISS until they start contributing
NIPC — for companies only
A NIPC is the tax ID of a legal person — an Lda, SA, association, or other collective entity. Individuals never receive a NIPC. If a form asks for a NIPC and you are a private person, they almost always mean your NIF.
Recommended order when moving to Portugal
- Get the NIF first (remotely if you are still abroad)
- Open a bank account with the NIF
- Obtain the NISS when employment or self-employment starts
- Create a company only if needed — that is when a NIPC appears
