Power of Attorney for a Portuguese NIF: How to Sign From Abroad (2026)
A remote NIF rests on one document: the power of attorney. Here's what it does and doesn't allow, how to sign it from abroad, and how to end it.

A power of attorney (procuração) authorises a person resident in Portugal to request your NIF and act as your fiscal representative before Finanças. For a standard NIF application it is normally signed electronically or by hand and scanned, without notarisation or apostille. It should be limited to tax-identification matters, and you can revoke it once you no longer need representation.
If you're getting a Portuguese NIF without being in Portugal, someone has to stand in for you. The power of attorney — procuração — is the document that makes that legal. It is short, routine, and signed by thousands of applicants every year, but it is also the document people are most nervous about, because "power of attorney" sounds far broader than what is actually happening here.
What the procuração actually authorises
- Requesting a NIF on your behalf at the Autoridade Tributária
- Being registered as your fiscal representative for correspondence
- Submitting and collecting the tax-identification paperwork tied to that request
- Receiving official notifications from Finanças at a Portuguese address
What it should not authorise
- Opening or operating bank accounts in your name
- Buying, selling, or mortgaging property
- Signing employment or rental contracts
- Accessing funds or making payments on your behalf
- Any general, unlimited representation with no stated purpose
A NIF power of attorney should name its purpose explicitly and stay narrow. If a template you're asked to sign grants broad financial powers "for convenience", that is a reason to ask questions, not a formality.
Does it need a notary or apostille?
For a standard NIF application, normally no. A signed document — electronically signed, or signed by hand and scanned — is accepted in the ordinary remote process. Notarisation and apostille become relevant when the same representative needs to act in higher-stakes procedures, typically property purchases, company formation, or court matters. Portuguese lawyers and solicitors also have a specific advantage: a power of attorney granted to them in that professional capacity does not require signature recognition.
How to sign it correctly from abroad
- Use the template your provider sends — the wording about fiscal representation matters
- Sign your name exactly as it appears in your passport, in Latin script
- Keep the signature inside the signature field, not across the text
- Date it; an undated power of attorney is routinely sent back
- Scan or export in colour as a single, legible PDF or image
- Check that the name, passport number, and address match the rest of your application
Signing for a spouse, child, or parent
You cannot sign for another adult, including a spouse — each adult signs their own procuração. For a minor, the document is signed by the parents, normally both, and a birth certificate establishes parentage; where one parent has sole custody, the custody decision takes the place of the second signature. For an elderly parent who cannot sign, a legally recognised guardianship or their own notarised power of attorney is needed, which is one of the few NIF cases where notarisation genuinely applies.
How long it stays valid, and how to revoke it
A narrowly drafted NIF power of attorney remains valid while the representation continues. Once you become a Portuguese tax resident, or you activate electronic notifications and have no active Portuguese tax obligations, you can end the arrangement: update your address on the Portal das Finanças, remove the representative through the e-balcão, and notify the representative in writing that the power of attorney is revoked. Keep a copy of the revocation and of the original document.
Warning signs in a power of attorney
- No named representative — only a company, with no individual identified
- Unlimited powers with no stated purpose or end condition
- Authority over bank accounts or property inside a NIF-only application
- No copy provided to you after signing
- Pressure to sign before you've read the document
